Most articles about olive oil's health benefits cite the same handful of population studies and stop there. This one uses an actual Certificate of Analysis — Musai's, tested on the October 2025 harvest by the World Olive Center for Health in Athens — to show what "high in antioxidants" concretely means in milligrams, and how it turns into an EU-recognized health claim.
The compounds doing the work
Extra virgin olive oil's reputation rests mostly on its polyphenols — a family of plant compounds that includes hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, oleocanthal and oleacein. They're what give a good extra virgin its peppery back-of-throat catch and slightly bitter edge; a mild, "clean-tasting" oil almost always means most of them were lost to heat, time or over-processing.
Musai's October 2025 harvest tested at 972 mg/kg total polyphenols, with an oleocanthal + oleacein (D1) index of 159 mg/kg. For context, commodity olive oil — refined, blended, or pressed from olives that sat too long before milling — typically falls well under 200 mg/kg. The gap isn't marketing; it's largely a function of how fast the olives go from tree to press, which is why Musai's are milled within hours of hand-picking.
The EU health claim, and what it actually requires
Under EU Regulation 432/2012, a producer can only state that "olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress" if the oil provides more than 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g — roughly a daily tablespoon-and-a-bit. It's a genuinely strict bar; most supermarket olive oils don't clear it, which is exactly why the claim isn't printed on most bottles.
At 19.44 mg per 20 g, Musai clears that threshold by roughly 4x — which is the kind of margin that comes from harvest timing and variety, not from anything added afterward.
Benefits for men and women: is there actually a difference?
The polyphenol mechanism itself — reducing oxidative stress on LDL cholesterol — doesn't work differently by sex. What differs is which downstream outcomes get studied and marketed more heavily for each: cardiovascular research skews toward general population and male-heavy older cohorts historically, while newer interest in olive oil's mild anti-inflammatory profile has driven more searches around skin, hormonal and menopause-adjacent contexts for women. The chemistry in the bottle is identical either way — a genuinely high-polyphenol extra virgin, used daily and uncooked at least some of the time, is the relevant variable, not the drinker's sex.
A reasonable daily amount, and how to actually get it
- ~2 tablespoons (20–30 g) a day is the range most of the underlying research uses — roughly a generous drizzle over a salad or vegetables, once.
- Raw beats cooked for polyphenol intake specifically — heat doesn't destroy all of them, but a portion degrades the longer and hotter the oil is used, so finishing a dish is more "efficient" than deep-frying in it.
- Store it away from light and heat. Polyphenols degrade in the bottle too — a dark bottle or tin, kept in a cupboard rather than next to the stove, keeps the number on the lab report closer to the number in your glass six months later.

How this compares to the wider Mediterranean diet evidence
Musai's own numbers sit inside a much larger body of research. The PREDIMED trial — one of the largest dietary intervention studies ever run, following over 7,400 participants at high cardiovascular risk — found a Mediterranean diet supplemented with roughly four tablespoons (50ml) of extra virgin olive oil daily cut the combined rate of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death by around 31% compared with a low-fat control diet, a result summarized well by the Wiki Journal Club's PREDIMED overview. That trial didn't test Musai specifically, but it used oil at a similar quality tier — genuine, unrefined extra virgin — which is precisely the category the EU polyphenol claim and Musai's own certificate sit inside. Not every "extra virgin" oil qualifies
It's worth being blunt about why this matters commercially as well as nutritionally: a meaningful share of oil sold as "extra virgin" doesn't test as high-polyphenol, or doesn't even pass as genuine extra virgin at all once independently tested — see our article on why extra virgin olive oil fraud is so common.
