Rapeseed oil (canola in North America) is the most common head-to-head comparison against olive oil in the UK and much of Northern Europe — and it's a genuinely closer contest than most "olive oil wins everything" content suggests.
Where rapeseed actually competes well
- Smoke point: refined rapeseed oil handles higher heat (around 200–230°C) than even a fresh extra virgin olive oil, making it a fair choice for deep-frying.
- Omega-3 content: rapeseed has a notably better omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio than olive oil, which is almost entirely monounsaturated with little omega-3.
- Price and neutrality: cheaper, and its mild flavor doesn't compete with delicate dishes the way a peppery EVOO can.
Where extra virgin olive oil wins clearly
- Polyphenols. Rapeseed oil has essentially none of the antioxidant compounds — oleocanthal, hydroxytyrosol — that a high-quality EVOO like Musai's 972 mg/kg carries. This is the entire basis of the EU health claim discussed in our benefits article, and rapeseed doesn't qualify for it.
- Flavor, when it matters. Finishing a dish, a salad, or bread — rapeseed is neutral by design; EVOO is the point.
- Less processing. Extra virgin is mechanically pressed; rapeseed oil sold at commodity prices is almost always solvent-extracted and refined.
What the omega-6/omega-3 ratio argument actually shows
The case for rapeseed's fat profile is more specific than "has omega-3s": research on the dietary omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio, reviewed in this peer-reviewed OCL journal analysis, points to a lower overall ratio as the meaningful goal — something both rapeseed and olive oil contribute to, since olive oil's omega-6 content is itself modest even without much omega-3. Neither oil is a strong direct source of the long-chain omega-3s (EPA/DHA) found in fish; rapeseed's contribution is the shorter-chain ALA form, which the body converts to those forms only in small amounts.
A practical way to have both
Nothing requires choosing one oil for the whole kitchen — keeping a bottle of each and using rapeseed specifically where its smoke point is the deciding factor (deep-frying, very high-heat searing) while defaulting to a high-polyphenol extra virgin oil everywhere else captures both oils' actual strengths rather than forcing a single winner.
