Olive oil hair masks show up constantly in home-remedy content. Unlike some skin claims, this one has decent basic-science support — with real limits.

What it can do

Olive oil's oleic acid penetrates the hair shaft measurably better than mineral or sunflower oil, reducing the amount of water hair absorbs and loses during washing — which is most of what "damage" from brushing and heat styling actually is. This makes it genuinely useful as a pre-wash treatment: applied to dry hair 30–60 minutes before shampooing, it can reduce protein loss during washing (see the correction below on how it compares specifically to coconut oil, the actual top performer in this research).

What it can't do

Best fit: thick, dry, curly or color-treated hair, used as an occasional pre-wash mask — not a daily product, and not a growth treatment.

The same oleic-acid chemistry is discussed from the skin-care angle in Olive Oil for Skin.

A correction worth making: coconut oil actually penetrates better

The claim that olive oil "penetrates the hair shaft better than many other oils" traces back loosely to a body of research led by the 2003 Journal of Cosmetic Science study by Rele and Mohile. Read closely, that research actually found coconut oil — not olive oil — reduced protein loss during washing most effectively, because its shorter, straighter lauric-acid chain penetrates the hair shaft more efficiently than olive oil's bulkier, unsaturated oleic acid. Olive oil showed a real but smaller benefit in the same line of research, not a superior one. See the study via PubMed.

So is a pre-wash olive oil mask still worth it?

Yes, with the correction above in mind — a genuine, moderate benefit for reducing protein loss and manageability, just not the single best oil for that specific job if coconut oil is equally available to you. For thick, dry, curly or color-treated hair, either is a reasonable pre-wash choice; the meaningful failure mode isn't picking the "wrong" oil, it's using either one as a daily leave-in rather than an occasional pre-wash treatment. See Olive Oil for Skin for the same oleic-acid chemistry applied elsewhere on the body.
