Packaging is one of the few olive oil quality signals you can actually assess before opening the bottle — and it's not just aesthetics.
Why dark glass and tin exist
Light — both UV and visible — accelerates the breakdown of chlorophyll and polyphenols in olive oil. A study exposing olive oil to light for just a few weeks shows measurably faster quality loss in clear containers than in dark glass or opaque tins. This is a real, physical effect, not a stylistic preference.
What to actually look for
- Dark green or amber glass, or an opaque tin — genuinely protective
- Clear glass — fine short-term if stored away from light, but a real liability on a sunlit shelf or in a display window
- Plastic — porous to oxygen over time and can leach compounds into the oil; avoided by essentially every quality-focused producer
Tins vs. dark glass: is there a real difference
An opaque tin blocks essentially all light, while dark green or amber glass still lets a small fraction through — enough that dark glass isn't quite the equal of a sealed tin under constant bright light, though both outperform clear glass by a wide margin. This is part of why bulk formats (5L and up) are more often sold in tin or bag-in-box: at that volume, a bottle sits opened and exposed for far longer, and full light-blocking matters more.
Why packaging is one of the few "tells" before you buy
Acidity, peroxide value and polyphenol content are all invisible until you either trust the label or see a lab report — packaging is the one quality signal you can actually assess standing in the aisle. It's not proof by itself; a producer could bottle carefully-tested oil in clear glass out of habit. But a producer who got the harvest date, the acidity, and the packaging right is rarely cutting corners everywhere else.
